An edition of prints taken from a drawing and painting on stone. This is from a small series of 4 prints entitled Underfoot.

This has been printed on two papers. Choose from a print on pale cream, smooth Simili Japon 130gsm, a paper that takes the ink readily and so produces a print with more contrast, or Fabriano 284gsm, a softer cotton and cellulose paper that prints with more detail, but a little lighter and more delicately than the Simili.

This is a series of small stone lithographs drawn using number 4 (medium) litho crayons. These were produced on my MA as part of my final project and came from my time spent in Ashton Court photographing, drawing and experiencing trees, plants and the atmosphere of the estate. I was drawn to a small wood where this series predominantly came from and gave rise to the Underfoot series of prints which looks at details we walk on by, essential processes in the ecosystem including death and regrowth, decomposition and new life This print features nettles and undergrowth.

About the artist:

Fiona Hamilton is a Bristol based printmaker. Her work explores the ecological sublime and an appreciation of the majesty of nature. She uses detailed intaglio etching, drypoint, lithography and chine collé to draw the viewer into an ethereal landscape that has an impact on our sense of place in relation to the natural world. She uses primarily black and white with natural tones of chine collé and sometimes layers of lithographic texture to introduce warmth to the stark palette and to invoke a sublime emotional connection. She works from sketches, photographs, notes and memory to create her prints.

Fiona has an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from The University of the West of England (2023). Previously she studied Graphic Fine Art at Canterbury (2002) and established Soma Gallery in 2004.
