"The artwork for the screen print is a small paper cut. The actual paper cut itself was used as a ‘film’ to make the screen. I make quite a lot of small (A4 ish) papercuts just to see how they work.

They usually go in a folder and are forgotten about. But sometimes they become small simple prints, because a lot of my work is quite heavy with words, it is a nice break for me to just make an image with no story, meaning or explanation." -- Rob Ryan

Colours: yellow, burgandy, brown

About the 20 Years Collection
Soma Gallery turned 20 in June 2024 so to mark this momentous occasion we asked 20 artists to produce a limited edition print to commemorate the 20 years. A portfolio of each print from the editions go to the 20 artists, and the final 30 prints are available for sale. You can read more about the project on our blog.

About the Artist
Rob Ryan was born in 1962 in Akrotiri, Cyprus. He studied Fine Art at Trent Polytechnic and at the Royal College of Art, London where he specialised in Printmaking.

Since 2002 he has been working principally within the paper cutting medium. Although he views himself first and always as a fine artist, his intricate papercut work adapts itself readily to screenprinting which have then transferred to ceramics, fabrics, lasercutting and other surfaces. He has collaborated with Paul Smith, Liberty of London, Fortnum and Mason and Vogue along with many other established companies.
